The expression for force on a charged particle in electric and magnetic fields is given. This is known as the Lorentz force.
A charge \(q\) ~in electric field \(\vec E\) and magnetic field \(\vec B\) experiences a force \(\vec F\), given by

\vec F = q( \vec E + \vec v \times \vec B)
\end{equation}
This expression for the force, known as the {\tt Lorentz force} forms the basis of operational definition
of the electric and magnetic fields. It may be noted that
- The electric force is independent of velocity.
- The magnetic force vanishes for a charged particle at rest. It is always perpendicular to the velocity.
