LaTeX has useful environments for multi-line equations, equation grouping, and alignment. Here are a few examples involving split, multiline, gather and align.

Equation:

Equation*:

\begin{equation*}
E = mc^2
\end{equation*}

Brackets:

\[E = mc^2\]

Brackets tagged:

\[E = mc^2\tag{x}\]


Split:
